Being a single black father presents unique challenges and triumphs. My journey has been a rollercoaster ride as I navigate raising my son, who is on the autism spectrum, while healing from cancer and starting my online store. This blog post reflects my experiences, the hurdles I've faced, and the lessons I've learned along the way.

The Diagnosis: A Life-Changing Moment

When I was diagnosed with cancer, my world was turned upside down. Sitting in the doctor's office, I felt the weight of the news pressing down on me. As a single dad, my immediate concern was for my son. How would I manage my health while ensuring he still felt secure and loved?

The treatment process was grueling. Some days, I struggled to get out of bed, let alone care for my son. But I fought—not just for myself, but for him. I leaned on my support system. Friends and family rallied around us, providing vital encouragement. Their support reminded me that I wasn’t alone in this battle.

Embracing the Hustle: Starting an Online Store

As I healed, I found inspiration to create something meaningful for my son and myself. Launching my business had always been a dream, and now felt like the right time to take that leap. I started Prints By Loupy aimed at providing for us and sharing my journey with the world.

Setting up the store was both exciting and daunting. I spent countless nights researching, designing, and figuring out logistics. My goal was to create a space where people could find exclusive gifts that resonate with our culture. For instance, in 2019 I launched a line of streetwear items celebrating the legacy of Tupac Shakur that quickly became popular, accounting for over 30% of my initial sales. In 2021, I sold NFT versions of those rare photographs, and four from the collection were featured in Allen Hughes' 2022 documentary series "Dear Mama."

Balancing Fatherhood and Entrepreneurship

Raising a son on the autism spectrum comes with challenges, especially as he enters seventh grade. The transition to middle school can be tough for any child, but for him, it means navigating social dynamics and academic pressures.

As a single black father healing, hustling and raising son, balancing my responsibilities as a father and entrepreneur was challenging. Some days, I felt overwhelmed juggling school meetings, therapy sessions, and the demands of the store. I learned to prioritize and set boundaries, ensuring that my son always felt supported. For example, I carved out dedicated time every week to indulge in his favorite pastime, riding on the Metro to the downtown library.

The Importance of Community

Finding a community has been essential in this journey. Connecting with other single black fathers has provided me with invaluable support. We share our stories, struggles, and victories. It’s comforting to know we are not alone.

I've also turned to online forums and local groups focusing on parenting children with autism. These connections have provided resources, advice, and a sense of belonging. In one online group, I found parents sharing their strategies, which significantly helped me understand how to better support my son in social situations.

Lessons Learned: Resilience and Growth

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is resilience. Life throws many challenges my way, but each obstacle has taught me something valuable. I’ve learned to adapt and embrace change, which is essential when life takes unexpected turns.

My son is my greatest inspiration. His determination to overcome challenges inspires me daily. Together, we celebrate small victories, like when he made a new friend at school or when I reached a milestone in my business. These moments remind us of our capability to grow and thrive, despite the challenges we face.

The Role of Self-Care

As a single dad, it's easy to neglect personal needs. However, I’ve discovered that self-care is crucial for my well-being and my ability to care for my son. I prioritize time for myself, whether that means exercising, writing, meditating, or simply enjoying a good book.

Taking care of my mental and physical health allows me to be more present for my son and focused on my business. I remind myself that I can't pour from an empty cup.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future

As I look toward the future, I am filled with hope and excitement. My online store continues to grow, and every day brings new lessons in entrepreneurship. My son is thriving, and I am committed to being the best father I can be. Together, we are navigating this journey, learning, and growing every step of the way.

The Path Forward

Being a single black father, healing from cancer, and raising a son on the autism spectrum is not easy. However, through resilience, community, and a focus on self-care, I have found a way to thrive.

If you are a single dad facing similar challenges, know that you are not alone. Embrace your journey, seek support, and remember that every step forward is a victory. Together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and our children.
